Thankfully there’s a day (a very special day) where you can stick a middle finger to social etiquette on your commute across the city, ride in style and let your inner exhibitionist run free. It’s called ‘No Pants day’ and it’s awesome.
The premise is simple: “Random passengers board a subway car at separate stops in the middle of winter without pants. The participants do not behave as if they know each other, and they all wear winter coats, hats, scarves, and gloves. The only unusual thing is their lack of pants.” Those are the official rules according to New York based prank collective Improv Everywhere who created the event back in 2002.
From 7 blokes who jumped on the underground minus their trousers grew an annual event with thousands of participants stripping down in 59 cities across the globe and despite the particularly chilly conditions we’ve had, Londoners braved the cold and commuted last Sunday in just their underwear – bringing new meaning to the term ‘nice n’ breezy’.
Next year sees the event’s thirteenth occurrence and no doubt Avant-Garde will be there to experience it first-hand (florescent pink boxers at the ready) and you’re more than welcome to travel with. Probably best to clarify now, the term ‘no pants’ is the Americanism for no trousers - so don’t turn up commando.
