Final Fantasy X/ X-2 HD

It’s a Final Fantasy HD Remaster of X and X-2 and it’s DAMN gorgeous!

A brief announcement at E3 and a selection of screenshots with comparison vids teased out by Square Enix this month means we’re pretty excited about the prospect of getting to replay one of our fav Final Fantasy instalments in all the glory of HD.

From what we’ve seen so far they’ve really sharpened up those character and menu visuals which can only mean good things for the standard game play and battle sequences but, in some shots, I’d hazard that the in game videos have a tendency to make the characters look awkwardly doll-esque.

Also remember those full motion video cut scenes throughout the game - the ones that were originally so high res it was like an orgasm for the eyes? Apparently nothings been done with them, and although they look the same because the rest of the game has benefited from a high-definition upgrade they now feel a tad low res in comparison. But hey those are some very small quibbles especially when you consider the Final Fantasy franchise has always led the way in some amazingly varied and jaw-dropping environments. You better believe that now they’re going to look even better. Just check some of the pics below, so crisp you’ll want to book a one way ticket to Spira in a heartbeat.

By ways of showing off the remastering of the 60 soundtracks in HD audio from the original Final Fantasy X game they’ve just started showing off their rearranged version of the battle music. It’s still the recognisable themes we still love but with more layers to the score adding elements of grandeur and more urgency.

Throw in an art book (cos everyone loves an art book) and lo and behold we have an upcoming limited edition box set.

So is this a way to squeeze more money from fans, by taking a well-loved classic in the FF franchise and just giving it a tune up? Probably. Are we going to be spending out on it? Oh go on then.

For those of us who have played the original game it will be a well-loved trip down memory lane without having to jump back to PS2 graphics. If you never got the chance to play X or X-2 then this is the best opportunity to do so. Either way it’s bound to ignite passions for a classic all over again.

We’ve yet to come across a specific release date aside from ‘sometime this year’ but because it’s coming out for the PS3 and PlayStation Vita odds are this will be released before the PS4 breaks onto the market. Expect a winter release date.
