New trailer for ‘The Evil Within’ makes us turn full circle. We already love/hate it
Roughly this time last year I was researching into what Shinji Mikami (Resident Evil/ Dino Crisis/Devil May Cry/Omnishua) was working on these days. Since rolling out action packed Vanquish in 2010 rumours were circulating that he was working on something special with Tango Gameworks; a game they claimed that would go back to the very ‘roots’ of horror survival. All I could dig up were four art concepts and a name: ‘Project Zwei’

Then 5 months ago we got its debut trailer.‘The Evil Within’ live action trailer (here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikedxbZ3E_A) that looked, at best, like another one of those god awful ‘Saw’ movies. Screenshots of gore reliant on a message desperately trying to convey: SCARY! Was this really the same project that Mikami was working on? We watched, shaken, and not in a good way…
Thank goodness a trailer of the ‘actual’ game's come out, because now that we’ve watched that ‘The Evil Within’ just can’t get here soon enough. It starts with Detective Sebastian Castellanos and his partner responding to a homicide call at an asylum. Where the trailer ends is where the game begins, Mikami commented to IGN “Thematically, it’s less about having twists and turns and more about maintaining an air of mystery. Through the story you learn a little bit more, and then a little bit more, but the more you learn, you also realize there’s far more mystery out there to unfold.”
Further details are purposefully elusive so I guess we won’t know what’s happening until we play through the game ourselves, though if the 12 min video gameplay's anything to go by (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMKhoHl9BnE) I think its safe to say we're in for something 'horrifically' fantastic.

Being the granddaddy of horror apparently comes with its own burdens though. Mikami will always be remembered for and compared to his earlier works; even with this game its hard not to notice the subtle but increasingly prevalent comparisons with the early Resi series.
To IGN: “It’s just my personal opinion,” says Mikami, “but I’m the type of person, I’m the type of creator that when someone says ‘that’s what I do, that’s my personal thing’ I want to do something different. I’ve done a lot of different things; I’ve done a lot of different kinds of games in my career, but really it always comes down to that – I want to overcome people’s perceptions of me.”
So that’s what we’re going to do, heck I’ll even forget about my previous awesome-shit-awesome expectations for this game. Mikami hasn’t let me down so far in delivering some epic sagas, so we’re looking forward to checking out this one and basing it on its own merits. Coming out 2014.
